Activities and Events

We understand that meeting new people can be challenging – especially as being homeless often means a lack of contact with family and friends for lots of reasons.  One of the main things that the people we work with tell us is that they struggle with boredom. Many homeless adults are unemployed or unable to work, which can add to not feeling confident about walking into a room full of people they don’t know.

The Hive offers lots of activities and events to help you meet new people, learn new skills,  and have fun in an atmosphere that’s welcoming, non-judgemental and kind.

All the activities are very relaxed, and you can be as involved as you want to be.

If you are living with AMAT UK, information about events and activities will be added to the notice board in your house.

If you don’t live with AMAT UK – you can access information and details about our activities and events in person at the The Hive

Social Activities – Our brilliant events coordinator, Janice, holds various events throughout the year including quizzes, bingo, coffee and catch up, and Resident days out to the coast or London. If you attend one of Janice’s events you are sure to meet new people, laugh a lot and come away with some sort of prize!

Regular groups:

ALIVE & SINGING – a weekly singing group made up of staff and individuals. An opportunity to shout your lungs out, dance and LAUGH!!!! The choir is led by local musician Cat – who works with the group to choose the songs and work towards performances. To date we have held small and large public performances, written and recorded an album about homelessness, and have plans to do more of this in the future.

Allotment Project: focuses on growing vegetables, flowers and having a piece of garden on the allotment at Fort Amherst that is yours to care for. Not only will it get you out and about – it’s a great way to meet others and learn about growing food. The food we grow on the allotment is used baking and cooking workshops or taken home by you!

Art Groups – We host different creative groups throughout the month, our fortnightly art group is run by one of our peer mentors.  The activities are run on the basis of each individual engaging in what they like to do best.

Curry Nights – Volunteers from Kent Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association set up and provide the most amazing curries. A really popular way to spend a Friday night at The Hive.

Desert Island Discs: is a session that explores what the “soundtrack of our lives’ has been. A talking group which is based around a different musical theme each week – it’s a chance to share your favourite music and tell us what the music means to you, why it speaks to you, what and who it reminds you of. Most people have a song that they feel has been written about them or has used the words that we couldn’t find to explain how we felt. Desert Island Discs is a very laid back and relaxed session.

Fishing Club – A peer-led fishing club during the fishing season. This is a popular session, a great way to meet new people and relax by the riverbed. All equipment and bait provided.
